Those F’s are: Fragility, Friction, and FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt). These changes may include requirements drift, data drift, model drift, or concept drift. encouraging and rewarding) a culture of experimentation across the organization. Fragility occurs when a built system is easily “broken” when some component is changed.
This Domino DataScience Field Note covers Pete Skomoroch ’s recent Strata London talk. Pete indicates, in both his November 2018 and Strata London talks, that ML requires a more experimental approach than traditional software engineering. These steps also reflect the experimental nature of ML product management.
by AMIR NAJMI & MUKUND SUNDARARAJAN Datascience is about decision making under uncertainty. Some of that uncertainty is the result of statistical inference, i.e., using a finite sample of observations for estimation. But there are other kinds of uncertainty, at least as important, that are not statistical in nature.
Crucially, it takes into account the uncertainty inherent in our experiments. Experiments, Parameters and Models At Youtube, the relationships between system parameters and metrics often seem simple — straight-line models sometimes fit our data well. It is a big picture approach, worthy of your consideration.
Therefore, the PM should consider the team that will reconvene whenever it is necessary to build out or modify product features that: ensure that inputs are present and complete, establish that inputs are from a realistic (expected) distribution of the data, and trigger alarms, model retraining, or shutdowns (when necessary).
It’s been a year filled with disruption and uncertainty. Businesses had to literally switch operations, and enable better collaboration and access to data in an instant — while streamlining processes to accommodate a whole new way of doing things. One day we were all going to the office, and the next we were working from home.
Instead, we focus on the case where an experimenter has decided to run a full traffic ramp-up experiment and wants to use the data from all of the epochs in the analysis. When there are changing assignment weights and time-based confounders, this complication must be considered either in the analysis or the experimental design.
Skomoroch proposes that managing ML projects are challenging for organizations because shipping ML projects requires an experimental culture that fundamentally changes how many companies approach building and shipping software. They have the foundations of data infrastructure. Yet, this challenge is not insurmountable.
Our post describes how we arrived at recent changes to design principles for the Google search page, and thus highlights aspects of a data scientist’s role which involve practicing the scientific method. There has been debate as to whether the term “datascience” is necessary. Some don’t see the point.
While leaders have some reservations about the benefits of current AI, organizations are actively investing in gen AI deployment, significantly increasing budgets, expanding use cases, and transitioning projects from experimentation to production. The AGI would need to handle uncertainty and make decisions with incomplete information.
Wouldn't it be great if we didn't require individual data to estimate an aggregate effect? A geo experiment is an experiment where the experimental units are defined by geographic regions. The expected precision of our inferences can be computed by simulating possible experimental outcomes.
by MICHAEL FORTE Large-scale live experimentation is a big part of online product development. This means a small and growing product has to use experimentation differently and very carefully. This blog post is about experimentation in this regime. But these are not usually amenable to A/B experimentation.
Machine learning, artificial intelligence, data engineering, and architecture are driving the data space. The Strata Data Conferences helped chronicle the birth of big data, as well as the emergence of datascience, streaming, and machine learning (ML) as disruptive phenomena.
by AMIR NAJMI Running live experiments on large-scale online services (LSOS) is an important aspect of datascience. We must therefore maintain statistical rigor in quantifying experimentaluncertainty. In this post we explore how and why we can be “ data-rich but information-poor ”.
Despite a very large number of experimental units, the experiments conducted by LSOS cannot presume statistical significance of all effects they deem practically significant. The result is that experimenters can’t afford to be sloppy about quantifying uncertainty. At Google, we tend to refer to them as slices.
