Smart cities are changing the world. When you think of real-time, data-driven experiences and modern applications to accomplish tasks faster and easier, your local town or city government probably doesn’t come to mind. But municipal government is starting to embrace digital transformation and therefore data governance. Municipal government has never been an area in which to look for tech innovation.
Business Analysts are often required to write business cases to justify whether or not a concept/product is viable. Business cases can be of varying lengths and structure. Taking on such a task can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are four basic but easily forgotten tips that will make the process easier, and result in a winning business case. 1.

Speaker: Ben Epstein, Stealth Founder & CTO | Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO, Aggregage
When tasked with building a fundamentally new product line with deeper insights than previously achievable for a high-value client, Ben Epstein and his team faced a significant challenge: how to harness LLMs to produce consistent, high-accuracy outputs at scale. In this new session, Ben will share how he and his team engineered a system (based on proven software engineering approaches) that employs reproducible test variations (via temperature 0 and fixed seeds), and enables non-LLM evaluation m
IBM Think 2019 brought a huge week of news for data professionals. IBM executives took to the stage and announced a wide range of new developments in the world of data and AI.
Let’s face it - almost no business today can afford to hire the amount of data scientists it would take to go from producing one machine learning model to 1,000 (or for that matter, 1 million) every year. The good news is that organizations don’t need to hire scores of data scientists in order to be productive.
A recently published research paper from Columbia University described a common dilemma in machine learning. Back in the mid-1990s, one cost-effective healthcare initiative investigated the application of machine learning to predict the probability of death for patients with pneumonia so that high-risk patients could be admitted to the hospital while low-risk patients were treated as outpatients.

Today, we’re pleased to announce the availability of IBM Streams as a premium add-on to IBM Cloud Private for Data, delivering on the promise of joining data with AI together in real-time.
There is a coherent overlap between the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. IoT is basically an exchange of data or information in a connected or interconnected environment. AI is about simulating intelligent behavior in machines that carry out tasks ‘smartly’. AI tries to imitate natural human intelligence or the cognitive functions that humans perform using their mind such as learning and problem-solving.
Might the term “IT” become lost in the sands of time? Nearly one fifth of the 21st century is behind us already – gosh time flies. Generation Z, those who were born in the 2000s, are now entering the workforce as adults. I wonder what the term “IT” means to them? If they learn by listening to office conversation, they would be forgiven for thinking it’s something companies used to do but is now becoming redundant – like slide rules or typing pools.
Two topics collided for me this week: a new joint French and German industrial policy that highlights the importance of AI and a change in national positioning with respect to trade with China. The source was an article, Germany’s fear of China , in this week’s US print edition of the Economist. The main topic, as captured by the article title, highlights a fascinating change in thinking.

Every business has a different path to Enterprise AI that’s necessarily affected by its industry, history, infrastructure, competitive environment, clientele, and more. That means that from region to region, trends and maturity in Enterprise AI differ.
Continuing on at looking into the claims being made about virtual reality (VR) data visualization, we will now look at the second most commonly made claim: VR data visualization is great for multidimensional data analysis; VR allows you to view the data in ‘multiple dimensions’. From taking a guess, we can assume that this relates to VR’s ability to display data in 3D.
Last night I was scheduled to present this topic at the Power BI User Group in Portland except the meeting was cancelled because of a snowstorm; except the snowstorm didn’t happen… not even a little.

Matt Josefowticz wrote a great piece recently – Technology May be the Answer for Insurers, but What Was the Question? In this he argues that there are only three levers of value in insurance: 1. Sell More. 2. Manage Risk Better (aka underwriting and adjusting). 3. Cost Less to Operate. And that while some of these will require an investment in technology, that investment should be framed in terms of those business drivers.
2019 is the year of the data-driven organization. The more data an organization collects, the more insights they will have, right? Well no actually, it’s more about how you glean the insights from the data rather than how much data. The post Data Virtualization: A Unified Platform for Insights appeared first on Data Virtualization and Modern Data Management.
Will multicloud and software anywhere be the differentiator that IBM needs? After having been IBM watchers for many years, we are in a unique position to assess what is happening and what has changed. What made the IBM Think conference interesting was not a huge number of brand new products; rather it was the focus on consistency of software across platforms.
Many software teams have migrated their testing and production workloads to the cloud, yet development environments often remain tied to outdated local setups, limiting efficiency and growth. This is where Coder comes in. In our 101 Coder webinar, you’ll explore how cloud-based development environments can unlock new levels of productivity. Discover how to transition from local setups to a secure, cloud-powered ecosystem with ease.
To keep processing costs low, many insurance carriers have a goal to increase the percentage of their claims that can be processed and decisioned with no human decision-making involved. This is called increasing the rate of straight-through processing (STP). Perhaps surprisingly, there remains a fair amount of human intervention involved in processing insurance claims.
What era of servers is your business running on? Can your outdated infrastructure compete in the age of digital transformation, where unprecedented data growth is driving the business economy? Or are you continuing to invest in a platform that was built ten years ago, or even more? Decade-old servers can’t keep pace with the mechanisms propelling today’s business outcomes, like big data, virtualization, cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI.
